This is a tribute to my childhood in Reno, Nevada. Featured are images of my parents, the house we lived in, and the Reno arch. This was actually Reno's second arch it was in place when we moved here in 1968. It was replaced by the third arch in the early ninties. The shadow figure in the image is yours truly.

This is a memorial image I created of my wife, Renee, on the anniversary of her passing in August. It is the merging of two photos. One is a wedding picture of Renee, and one I took at the Idlewild Park rose gardens in Reno. I merged the images with the GIMP app on a PC. I then added a frame with the Pics-art app on the android. I am still trying to get the hang of using the art apps on the Android. A rather ambitious goal will be to draw a bird with my finger using the Sketchbook app. This will be for the Georgia State bird project.

After a four month hiatus, I am up and running again. Three months in a homeless shelter, then a transition to a graveyard shift job put a damper on my art hobby. It has been difficult finding time to go use the computers at the library. However, my sister-in-law, gave me an android tablet after she bought herself a new one. I have slowly been learning the art apps. that are available since then. This image was created from a pencil sketch of myself that was then altered by using the Pics-Art app.

I have also downloaded the Sketchbook app., and I am beginning the process of learning how to draw with my fingers. Other projects I am working on are the Georgia state bird image, and I am putting a collage together from previous photos and drawings.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-60563490199480386822013-06-21T12:07:00.000-07:002013-06-21T12:07:05.773-07:00The Duke of Duct Tape

This is my Dad. He was an eccentric character. Life was never dull when he was around. Dad considered himself a self-taught jack-of-all-trades. Duct Tape was one of his favorite tools for all purpose use. Dad's Rube Goldberg approach to home improvement projects has made him a family legend, who I am sure will go down in history for generations to come.

In all seriousness, though, Dad was a very talented artist. He was actually a professional artist of a sort. He worked as a cartographer for the U.S. Forest service for 30 years. He worked during an era when maps were still being drawn by hand. My Dad really excelled at his craft. He also liked oil painting as a hobby and he created some very nice paintings. Unfortunately they all were destroyed in a house fire. I miss my Dad a lot. He was a real hoot!

This image is a very simple merging of two photographs. I have been focusing a lot of my efforts lately at merging photos and drawings together using GIMP. I am still in the learning process of using the applications. I hope to create more complex collages for future projects.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-39290818793786608652013-05-12T14:10:00.001-07:002013-05-12T14:10:58.236-07:00Mom

This is my mother. She passed away in 2011 at the age of 94. She was a wonderful mother whose love and forgiveness were always unconditional. She was someone who was always there to stand by me through thick and thin. Mom was very talented artistically also. She was a very good writer and she also made beautiful prize-winning homemade dolls. She left quite a legacy, living long enough to see great-great grandchildren. May God rest her soul always.
Some of you have played the game Rock-Paper-Scissors. Just about all of us have heard of it. Here is a literal expression of the term. I used two photos that were taken of a book page and a pile of rocks. I also used a portion of a drawing that was taken from a previous project. The photos and the drawing were blended together using GIMP.
One of the world's most endangered birds, the magnificent California Condor, is making a painstaking recovery. God's speed to it's continued survival. This image was compiled from three separate photographs. Two are my own and one (the bird of course) was downloaded from the internet. If I ever actually saw one of the birds, I would drop-kick my bucket list and walk away more overjoyed than I could possibly imagine.

It is time to start marching through Georgia! Please forgive my use of these tired cliches. I know my writing imagination isn't very original. My main goals in writing are spelling everything correctly and using complete sentences. Hopefully, with time, my writing will become more polished and original.

Anyway, the representative bird for Georgia is the Brown Thrasher. This bird is a close cousin of the Mockingbird and is commonly seen throughout the eastern half of the country. I remember seeing it on occasion during my time in Texas.

My tentative plan for this project is to draw the bird with pencil and marking pens. and then download a photo or photos for the background. After that I am un-decided on whether to draw the background digitally from the source photos or just do alterations. It will depend on time and degree of difficulties encountered along the way. Digital drawing is a much longer investment of time which is inconvenient without your own computer. Stay tuned! Oops! There goes another tired cliche.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-88493610153157129592013-02-25T15:11:00.002-08:002013-02-25T15:14:12.189-08:00Self Portrait

Well, this is me. It is a rather disturbing image I have to admit. It is an honest portrayal of what life has been like for me for much of the last three years. There has been a sense of being stepped on into the bricks. Loss of loved ones and financial upheaval have been the major contributing factors. My wife died in 2010. I then lost my mother the following year. This past year, I have come very close to being homeless. eleventh hour salvation from family members of whom I am eternally grateful have kept this from happening. Life on life's terms is agonizingly difficult at times. This past three year period has been especially so. Faith in God and fellowship with others with similar beliefs have kept me from going over the deep end. My new-found participation in art has also been a saving grace as well. When I am involved with art, my mind is almost always in a very good place. It does save!

I am not going to advertise this post on social media like I usually do. For those who come across this randomly, I apologize if it is disturbing to you. It is honest expression for me, however. Being human, expression, artistically or otherwise is ugly at times, as well as, beautiful.

This project is the combination of a pencil sketch (my face) and two cell-phone photos. I used GIMP for alterations.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-42566229959638670372013-02-19T09:15:00.001-08:002013-02-19T11:58:04.066-08:00Moody

This effort is more of an abstract art project. In general, I believe my artistic imagination is hopelessly linear. However, I have a great fascination with, and admiration of, abstract art. I love artwork that is multi-layered and multi-dimensional, especially artwork that has randomness to the layering. When I look at this type of art, I often get the feeling that I am looking into different windows of the universe at the same time in a dream-like state of existence. It can be quite a buzz! My effort at layering here is quite simple. I took a couple of cell phone images and merged them together. I then wrote the text in. Hopefully with time and experience, my grasp of layering and abstract arrangement will improve. It is definitely a goal. jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-51488110596722755672013-02-12T09:15:00.000-08:002013-02-12T09:15:02.742-08:00Florida Finished

Well, it's finally done! This is the first state bird project I have completed since I moved to Reno last October. I am very happy to get the series going again. This was done differently than last projects. The project combined elements of conventional drawing, digital drawing, and altered imagery. I drew a sketch of the bird with a pencil and markers. I then took a photo of the sketch with my cell phone and downloaded it to the computer. The next step was to download an image of the Florida flag from the internet. When this was completed, I took the bird and flag elements and created separate layers from them with the GIMP application. GIMP was then used to merge the bird and flag layers together. Finally, the GIMP pencil tool was used to create the text and purple heart logo. This is the first time that I used GIMP exclusively for all the digital artwork. In the past, I used Jpeg, as well as GIMP. I prefer Jpeg in all honesty, because, the tools are far more familiar to me. However, these tools aren't available to me right now. I will have to wait to get my own computer shipped to me from Texas. There was quite a learning curve using GIMP, and there will be a steep curve for sure on future projects. All in all, I am pleased with the way it turned out, though, considering all the frustrating trial and error that took place.

After a three-month hiatus, I am finally ready to begin my next state bird card. Florida's bird will be the subject, and as you can see, this is a repeat performer-the Northern Mockingbird. It was, of course, first featured on the Arkansas card. This bird enjoys enormous popularity in the southeastern states. It is the state bird of five different states in the region. This is a rough prototype for the project. I drew the bird with pencil and color pens. I then photographed it with my cell phone and sent it to my e-mail account. From there, I downloaded it to the blog. This is how I have been getting my artwork on-line without having my own computer.

This will be a new and different challenge for me. I am going to attempt to draw it with GIMP tools. My previous drawings were done with jpeg tools which I no longer have access to. I don't know much about GIMP tools. The learning curve is going to take quite a while. My computer sessions at the library are only for one hour at a time, therefore, that is going to add more time to the project as well. I will give it my best shot though. I really miss drawing with the mouse. I do like doing conventional sketches, but I get more artistic satisfaction and enjoyment with the mouse. jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-73279317087717137202012-12-16T10:38:00.001-08:002012-12-16T10:38:30.448-08:00Four-eyed CatHere is another one of my disturbing sketches altered to a hideous effect with GIMP.
Here is another example of my sketches that I took a photo of from my cell phone. I then used GIMP to jazz it up a bit. Using photographs, even bad ones, provide endless possibilities for altered art. With this, all I did was draw the sketch, photograph it with the phone, download the photo to my e-mail, create a temporary file on the desktop, and then drag the file to GIMP to do the alterations. This makes it possible to store artwork on my blog even though I am currently without a computer of my own.
Here it is! It's the state bird of Delaware, the Blue Hen Chicken. I know! It's not really blue. At least the model I used wasn't blue, but it was the best photo I could find. As a bonus, I threw in a couple of peach blossoms which happen to be Delaware's state flower.

This was more of a mixed-media effort than the last couple of projects. I used a piece of stained glass for the background and a paper cutout for the Delaware map. I thought the light from the scanner created an interesting effect on the stained glass with different colors. During this project, I figured out a way to do legible handwriting. The word Delaware was written freehand. I hope you can read it ok. My source photo for drawing the chicken was from: www.statebirds.blogspot.com. The source photo for drawing the flowers was from: www.webclipart.about.com.

This is going to be my last project for awhile. I am re-locating, and I won't have a computer for awhile. I am going to have to go back to drawing the old-fashioned way for the time being. The next bird in the series will be a repeat performer. It will be the state bird of Florida, the Northern Mockingbird, which has already appeared representing Arkansas. I have no idea when or how it will be done. I would now like to thank everybody who has provided support and encouragement for my fledgling art endeavors. They have mainly been family members and other artists. I really appreciate your comments. Until I am on-line again, take care! The Delaware Blue-Hen Chicken is completely drawn now. Here is how it might look if it was fed some plutonium pellets. It will have its' normal colors when the project, as a whole, is finished. I just have to add a couple more elements to it. It could be done by tomorrow. One thing I don't like about drawing birds is doing the legs and claws. They are the least attractive features of a bird and and, at times, a real hassle to draw, because, of the small sizes and the angles that are involved. Angles and me have a dysfunctional relationship. The legs and feet of a chicken aren't too bad to deal with, however, since, they are much larger. jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-60013333665354581532012-09-17T01:00:00.000-07:002012-09-17T01:00:14.529-07:00Delaware Update

Here is my progress so far on the Delaware project. As you can see, the majority of the bird is finished. It has been slow going like the other projects. I am still learning as I go. The drawing process hasn't been that difficult. There are just some complexities involved with the color patterns and the shapes of certain aspects of the drawing. This is what takes time. I am not hurrying though. Patience has been paying off here. I am gaining better control of the mouse which has made detail work easier. The colors have been easy to recreate. They have been mostly shades of gray. I am thinking more and more that this bird should have been named the Gray Hen Chicken. In all honesty, I have yet to use any blue coloring with this drawing. I am hoping to be finished by next week.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3144686204911291721.post-42498211958443336202012-09-06T23:12:00.000-07:002012-09-06T23:12:46.645-07:00Delaware Progress

Here is a rough image of Delaware's Blue Hen Chicken. This is a drawing, not a photo, although I inverted the color values in Photoshop. I am addicted to playing around with color inversions. I'm sorry! I don't really want to tip-off what the colors of the finished product are going to be anyway. The drawing hasn't been too difficult so far. It has just been very tedious. The detail involved with feather patterns have been greater than the other birds that I have drawn. I can honestly say that I have never drawn a chicken before-even just doodling around. It has been quite interesting. I really liked doing the face. The texturing process was a lot of fun. I know I have said it before, but digital drawing is a lot different than coventional drawing. It is very much a sculpting and manipulating process of pixels which are those little squares that make up an digital image. I have fallen into drawing this way mainly, because I don't have money for art supplies, or a place for an art studio (a place that I can mess up). Maybe it was meant to be. In any event, it's a lot of fun and a fascinating process to learn.jonreneewebb@msn.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14985999410992868641noreply@blogger.com1
